The new cougar lifestyle goes beyond the TV show Cougar Town, and it’s definitely not your mother’s Cougar bar.

There is no minimum age requirement to be a Cougar. The average age span on Cougar Life is 5 to 9 years – and our members range from 35 to 65.

Younger men who date older, sexy women are affectionately referred to as “Cubs.” Sometimes there’s only a five-year age difference between a cougar and her cub, sometimes it’s 20 (or more).

It really doesn’t matter as long as everyone knows what they’re looking for and what they’re getting.

Cougars bring their experience in life (and relationships), their maturity, their confidence (in and out of the bedroom), and their ability to see the bigger picture. Cougars typically take better care of themselves, from going to the gym to whipping up a home-cooked meal when the mood strikes (and sharing it with their cub if he’s lucky). They don’t get caught up in the little things, tend to avoid drama, and are independent with their own lives, hobbies, interests, and friends.

Cubs, on the other hand, are full of the energy and optimism that go hand in hand with youth. They’re often more open minded than their older counterparts, less judgmental, and are able to see the humor in almost any situation.

While using the term Cougar to refer to age-discrepant dating is relatively new, it is not a new phenomena that older women date younger men—not by a longshot.

According to a Time roundup, famous older women/younger men relationships throughout history include:

• The story of Phaedra in Hippolytus chronicles the tale of an older, married woman who falls in love with a much younger man.
• Catherine the Great not only accomplished a lot politically, but had quite the list of lovers—including Alexandrovich Zubov, a man 40 years her junior.

That’s not all, though.

Statistics show that cougar/cub relationships are nothing new.

• In her 1988 book “Of a Certain Age: Women and Age Discrepant Marriages, Sylvia Marion Carley proves that 14% of marriages are older women married to younger men. While the age ranges aren’t specified in most of the cited studies, it was noted that the man was the younger party in 27% of relationships as early as 1900.
• In the U.S., Census Bureau research shows that in the year 2000 12% of all marriages were between an older woman and a younger man. According to 2003 AARP results, women dating younger men accounted for 34% of relationships.

We know that women love dating younger men because they’re less jaded with love and relationships, they have a fresh outlook on life, and they’re not afraid to have fun. We also know that younger men seek out older women for their confidence, their sense of self, and their life experience.
